John Von Ohlen Scholarship Fund
Drummer John Von Ohlen, co-founder of the Blue Wisp Big Band and featured soloist with the Stan Kenton and Woody Herman orchestras, died October 3, 2018 at the age of 77.
Von Ohlen was Cincinnati's premiere jazz drummer for the past half-century. The Indianapolis native settled in Covington, living with singer Mary Ellen Tanner, after touring with Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Mel Torme and the Holiday On Ice shows, playing in pit bands for Broadway shows, as well as a jazz drums instructor at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. In addition to all of his accomplishments, John found time to be a Board Member for the Cincinnati Jazz Hall of Fame. In memory of John, the CJHOF has established the John Von Ohlen Scholarship to be awarded annually to a deserving high school student in John's memory. Become a part of John's legacy and donate today!
